Welcome

Hi everyone my name is Robert,
I decides to set up this blog due to my love to plants and especially Orchids; but be aware I am not a specialist in the field nor have any degree. Everything I know either comes (will come) from personal experience or that of others that shared their knowledge with me.

Although I may not have huge amount of space or dozens of plants, I do have my one single windowsill and 8 orchids (and one other plant). That's the world to me and I cannot imagine living without my plants.

So let's be honest, we surround ourself with plants because we love life.

I will be posting about orchid species and hybrids, trying to update between with my own little creations and what life brings.

So let's get started.

Orchid ID: Paphiopedilum niveum

When it comes to orchids we have a huge list of requirements and we want fragrance, compact, vigorous, wow effect, and just everything in one box. Luckly for you there is Paphiopedilum niveum. This little guy is a species orchid, it's beautifully white with tiny freckles, it's more compact than anything else and it blooms with a big, big flower which sometimes can bear two or three on one spike and it smells of roses. Yup roses! What not to love! Therefore I always longed to have one and absolutely can't wait for my own one to bloom for me next year! I never had a thing for white orchids but then since i saw white paphiopedilum I decided I do have a thing especially for these guys in white. Orchid ID: Paphiopedilum Maudiae Green

Paphiopedilum is by far one of my beloved orchids ever, and will always take a crown place in my collection. They are hassle free, don't require any special hot or cold temperatures or humidity. They prefer shadier places and bit more moisture, and the flowers can last for weeks. Paphiopedilum are divided into two cultural groups: the warm growing, more sun tolerant and with mottled leaves - like our famous Maudiae Green, and cold growing with plain leaves, preferring colder temperatures and more shade. Both types however require a bit colder nights for the flower buds to set but this isn't hard to achieve and a open window during the night should be suitable enough. Paphiopedilum Maudiae Green is a beautiful, old hybrid that stood the test of time for more than 100 years, where others have passed and gone out of fashion, this cross of P. callosum and P. lawrenceanum is still one of the most desired orchids ever. Aliceara (Degarmoara) Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy"

I heard about this orchid "it grows like a weed but blooms more beautiful than anything I have ever seen", and I must agree with this term as this Aliceara belongs to the three most beloved by myself orchids. Someone can say it's white and plain, but it's not purely white or plain or definitely not boring. Aliceara (Degarmoara) Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy" has it's parenthood in a cross between  Bratonia Cartagena x Oncidium. Gledhow . It was registered by Bee Lian Nursery in Thailand, on the 1st of January 1989. So from the start, this is a epiphytic growing, intergenetic orchid hybrid, taking many traits from it's both parents. Saying this it will require quite similar care and watering routine. The flowers seem to be white but they sometimes show a painted green shadow that beautifully marks the centre of the petal maroon spots in random order.
