Orchid ID: Paphiopedilum Lippewunder x glaucophyllum

Well grab yourself a chair and let me tell you a story.

As you can guess it's about a paphiopedilum orchid, what else.

This guy was sent to me as a Paphiopedilum American Hybrid, and imagine my surprise when I didn't see the spotting on the bud when it formed and then the oil pain orange and amber when it finally cracked and you could gaze inside.

This was the most wonderful mistake i had in my life, this was beautiful and irreplacable.

The Paphiopedilum Lippewunder x glaucophyllum is a child of the famous Lippewunder hybrid which was awarded several times in the history and the lovely glaucophyllum species.

Both of them have strong traits and great qualities.

The foliage is really nice and shiny, the leafs don't grow that long however they are very curved and fleshy so be prepared to fight with them a few times to move them in a better angle.

It has the vigorousnes of glaucophyllum, the strenght to grow a lot of new roots and fans in a very short time. But it also has the Lippewunder flowers which are huge and very flamboyant reminding you of a tropical sunrise or a amber jewel.

When it comes to growing, it doesn't require a lot. A good semi shaded location, and watering every week. Remember to boost it up with a growth boster every so often and then switch to a  bloom boster when it's in spike.

It's not a compact orchid if you are expecting that, oh no no. It's big bulky and will annoy you sometimes because it does take space, and you don't want to damage the foliage because it's really shinny and looks nice even when not in bloom.

Try to pot it in a good bark mix together with coconut chunks and charcoal to clean up the chemicals from the water and soften it up.

Where to find it?

Try your local orchid nurseries or in EU try Orchideen Wichmann or OrchidGarden in Poland.

Orchid ID: Paphiopedilum niveum

When it comes to orchids we have a huge list of requirements and we want fragrance, compact, vigorous, wow effect, and just everything in one box. Luckly for you there is Paphiopedilum niveum. This little guy is a species orchid, it's beautifully white with tiny freckles, it's more compact than anything else and it blooms with a big, big flower which sometimes can bear two or three on one spike and it smells of roses. Yup roses! What not to love! Therefore I always longed to have one and absolutely can't wait for my own one to bloom for me next year! I never had a thing for white orchids but then since i saw white paphiopedilum I decided I do have a thing especially for these guys in white. Father to many beautiful crosses which have won many awards this orchid is a Must Have for anyones collection. When it grows big and happy it's a outstanding joy to see. Because paph. niveum originally comes from Thailad it's used to moderate temperatures in our houses ...

Orchid ID: Paphiopedilum Maudiae Green

Paphiopedilum is by far one of my beloved orchids ever, and will always take a crown place in my collection. They are hassle free, don't require any special hot or cold temperatures or humidity. They prefer shadier places and bit more moisture, and the flowers can last for weeks. Paphiopedilum are divided into two cultural groups: the warm growing, more sun tolerant and with mottled leaves - like our famous Maudiae Green, and cold growing with plain leaves, preferring colder temperatures and more shade. Both types however require a bit colder nights for the flower buds to set but this isn't hard to achieve and a open window during the night should be suitable enough. Paphiopedilum Maudiae Green is a beautiful, old hybrid that stood the test of time for more than 100 years, where others have passed and gone out of fashion, this cross of P. callosum and P. lawrenceanum is still one of the most desired orchids ever. When you look at it you can easily understand why, the ...

Aliceara (Degarmoara) Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy"

I heard about this orchid "it grows like a weed but blooms more beautiful than anything I have ever seen", and I must agree with this term as this Aliceara belongs to the three most beloved by myself orchids. Someone can say it's white and plain, but it's not purely white or plain or definitely not boring. Aliceara (Degarmoara) Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy" has it's parenthood in a cross between  Bratonia Cartagena x Oncidium. Gledhow . It was registered by Bee Lian Nursery in Thailand, on the 1st of January 1989. So from the start, this is a epiphytic growing, intergenetic orchid hybrid, taking many traits from it's both parents. Saying this it will require quite similar care and watering routine. The flowers seem to be white but they sometimes show a painted green shadow that beautifully marks the centre of the petal maroon spots in random order. In this setting it resembles the features of a white lilly. The flowers have a faint, t...
